Book Club Meeting- The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
If you enjoy books, historical fiction, Charleston and quilts you will want to sign up for a “one and done” book club. After the March Guild Meeting, we will go out to lunch (at a restaurant to be determined) for a discussion of the book “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd. This book is the fictionalized history of the Grimke sisters, Sarah and Angelina (Nina) who were at the forefront of the abolitionist and women’s rights movements, wound around the intriguing narrative of a young slave, Hetty, who was given to Sarah as an 11th birthday present. Sarah despises slavery, even at that early age, and out of principle attempts to reject the gift. There is a fictional quilt in the book made by Charlotte which is based on two extant ones made by an actual slave from Georgia, Harriet Powers. These quilts are in the collections of the Smithsonian and The Boston Museum of Arts.
