Maye River Quilters is a 501(c)(3) organization as a Private Foundation. Each year we select one or two charitable interests towards which we donate money or in-kind goods.
Charitable Interest (2024 - 2025) Habitat for Humanity
Martha Greenly, Chair
The Charitable Interest for 2024-25 is to make 10 quilts for the 10 Habitat for Humanity homes being completed in Hardeeville (Jasper County) SC.
Ten teams have been formed who will each make a quilt for a new homeowner. All quilts must be the size of 50-54” wide by 70-74” long.
Oct Update - Charitable Giving project for this year is fast approaching. Our ten groups are almost finished with the quilts for Habitat for Humanity, and so far, the ones turned in are just beautiful! I have the labels printed for each quilt, and will attach them as each quilt is turned in. Please have all quilts given to me, Martha Greenly, no later than October 20, so the final labels can be sewn on. We will display the ten quilts at the November meeting, and photograph each one with the group that made it. Then they will be presented to the representative for Habitat for Humanity. They will be given to each family sometime in November so that they have them for the holidays. I have been so impressed by the quality of these quilts! All of you who participated have worked diligently to make quilts that will be cherished by these new homeowners. I appreciate your generosity and dedication to this charity, chosen for this year’s Charitable Giving project. Most of the quilts was made by the beautiful fabric donated by the family of Carol S. Gregory.
Thank you so much! Martha
Sept Update - We already have at least five quilts completed and ready for quilting, so this month I’d like to have anyone willing to machine quilt one of these quilts tops to contact me so I can get the finished top and backing to you. Labels are being printed and will be ready to be sewn on once they are quilted. I want to thank all the members who are working on this project, and I know the homeowners will love the quilts they receive. Thanks especially to the group leaders, and the individual machine quilters who have volunteered to quilt the finished tops. All of you have worked very hard to make this project a
Project Description: We will be making 10 quilts for ten new homeowners in the Hardeeville area (Jasper County). Our goal is to have all ten quilts finished by December, so they can be presented to each family before Christmas. There will be a standard size for each quilt of approximately 50-54 inches wide by 70-74 inches long. This is the perfect size for a quilt to snuggle up with on the couch, and can be used by all members of the family. The goal is to have ten teams of members who would each work on one quilt. This team can choose their own pattern, colors, and fabric. There will be plenty of donation fabric available for tops and backing. Most of the beautiful fabric was donated by the family of Carol S. Gregory. The guild will supply the same batting for all quilts. We don't anticipate needing additional fabric, but if a team finds that they need some, there will be a small budget for additional fabric.
Charitable Interest (2023 - 2024) Patriotic Pouches
Patriotic "pouches" were given to the residents of the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, SC. The pouches will be used by the residents to carry their eye glasses and cell phones so as not to lose or misplace them.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call Kathy Coates at 843-757-6284.

The Charitable Interest Committee Gathers on February 12 to make more Placemats.
At our meeting on Saturday Nov. 5th we presented 175 holiday placemats to Lili Coleman who is the Executive Director of "Meals on Wheels". She gave us a brief presentation on how this organization is able to share MOA with the clients in Bluffton and Hilton Head. We also gave her 10 "clothing protectors" and one microwave bowl. On Friday Nov. 18, we met with Celeste, our contact at MOA for this project and gave her 90 more placemats, 11 clothing protectors and 12 microwave bowls. Thanks to each of you we created 260 Holiday Placemats, 21 "clothing protectors, and 13 microwave bowls for MOA. We make a great team! and created a happier holiday for the Meals on Wheels clients.
Meals on Wheels was very excited to have the talents of Maye River Quilt Guild to provide quilted placemats to their clients. These placemats will help brighten the day for everyone they provide meals to on a daily basis. Many of their clients are isolated from family and friends and the volunteer drivers are often their only point of contact during any given day. One of the goals is to not only provide a wellness check as part of delivery, but also to engage the client with a hearty good morning, perhaps a happy birthday, and some conversation.
Meals on Wheels would love to have any member of the guild ride along with one of our drivers on the day we deliver the placemats. Meals on Wheels delivers meals every day, Monday thru Friday in the mornings for about 3 hours both on and off island in the Bluffton-Hilton Head area. Come experience first hand the joy you can encounter delivering a placemat and a meal!
The size of a placemat provided was 12" x 16".
Thank you again for your support for this project.
CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS (Contact: DEBI BACON)
For the last several years, Maye River has held a Stocking Challenge in December. Stockings are collected and donated to the Walterboro Veterans Victory House.
Members may pick up a Stocking pattern at the November meeting, take the pattern home, make a stocking, embellish it and bring it back to the December meeting. First and second prizes will be awarded.
For 2022, the Emily Geiger Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will fill the stockings with personal care items and deliver the stockings to the Victory House in time for Christmas.
Members making the stockings, need to know:
A pattern and directions will be provided at the November meeting. The pattern is hand drawn and it is NOT possible to email it. Please don’t decrease or increase the size of the pattern; they need to be uniform. Other than maintaining the size, you can design your own.
Make at least one stocking using the pattern. You may make as many as you want but remember that you are DONATING the stocking. Embellish, trim, applique, piece the front, quilt it. It is totally up to you as to what your stocking will look like. Yes, patriotic stockings are welcome as are Christmas fabrics.
Each stocking must have a hanging loop, a lining and must be the size of the pattern.
Bring your stocking to the December meeting in a bag with your name inside. They will be displayed and those at the meeting will have a chance to vote for the “Best of Show’ and “Most Original”. Prizes will be awarded.
Stockings will be displayed at the Emily Geiger Christmas luncheon. Afterwards, chapter members will stuff them with personal care items and deliver them in time for Christmas to Veterans Victory House.
Donations Made to Women’s Prison
One of the goals for Maye River Quilters was Education. To fulfill this goal the education committee members taught 4th and 5th graders at the Boys and Girls Club in the art of quilting. Covid put a stop to that, sad to say.
In order to follow through with the objective of education it was decided to donate all the sewing machines, notions and fabric to the women's prison in Columbia. All our donations will go to The Programs and Services at the prison. The purpose is to set up a room where the ladies can learn to sew. Hopefully they will be able to use the new skill when their time at the prison is over.
In doing this Maye River Quilters continue to fulfill their Education and Charitable Interests intent. Way to go, everybody wins!

At Ease Quilts - November 2022 Update
Two more quilts will be donated to Caris Hospice in November.
Caris Hospice is using “At Ease” Quilts when working with Veterans in end of life situations. The hospice goal is to hopefully give the veteran closure from experiences of war. Oftentimes, the veterans will never discuss what happened, they may feel possible regrets and are unable to let it go and be at peace. If you have an interest in making an "At Ease" quilt please contact Linda Forry.
Charitable Interest (2021 - 2022)
The final tally for Charitable Interest projects for 2021-2022 was 118 pillowcases, 90 bibs, 31 Fidget Quilts, and 36 Marble Mazes!! Most everything was distributed to Caris Hospice, The Pines, and The Vineyard. 6 AT EASE quilts were also given to Hospice. Everyone at the facilities were so excited to get all our projects and appreciated all we have done for them.
Thank-you Note from Caris Hospice Sums Up Why We do Charity Quilts
Brenda Lucas had a small patriotic quilt from Sea Island Quilters that did not have a home and we asked Caris Hospice if they could use it. They said yes, she had the perfect place for it. And so below is the rest of the story!! The quilt was made by our own Janet Swan!!
Hope your new year is starting out well. I wanted to let the person who made the patriotic quilt that I just gave it to the loveliest, 102 year-old man who was in the Air Force—when he was in it was called the Army Air Corp. He is still quite sharp and leads the daily exercise group at the residential facility in which he lives!
He was so appreciative to receive the quilt. Please let the quilter know she made a sweet, sweet man’s day.
